I recently watched a video of him being interviewed before his Spring 2012 show and here is what he had to say in response to what the story behind his collection is and how women have changed since he first started designing:
There is always a story. Most of the time or always is to make the very best I can to make a women feel wonderful about herself, that has always been the principle for me when I am creating any collection. Thinking of the women, what can I do for her to make her feel her very best, to fulfill her aspirations; a women has a strong sense of who she is as a woman.
It is extraordinary what has happened to women over the 30, 34 years because you are dealing with a woman who fully wants to, cares about the projection of her individuality, who she is and what she can bring to the society in which she lives and fulfill her life in the extraordinary way that she can.
-Oscar de la Renta
What I admire most about Oscar de la Renta is how he does not define womanhood through a stereotype of sexuality but rather by a means of aspirations and strength. He manages to capture the individuality of a woman through understanding and identifying her beauty as a woman for what she is and what she does and then emphasizing that understanding with his art that transfers onto many of women from many of different backgrounds.
As if I do not swoon enough over the man here are my "of the moment" swoon-worthy images.
I adore the beautiful coral in the amazing vase in the center of his store.
If only Oscar and I were friends chatting on the phone about his inspirations.
The man does not stop at clothes he even conquers jewelry.
Oscar's creations.
Times from the past.
